Guilt, it’s wasted on the poor…
Guilt
Guilt is great if you know how to use it. Guilt is like a muscle, the more you use it the stronger it gets. Guilt is the rich person’s best friend. Guilt is the big “get out of hell free card“.
Guilt is a wonderful thing. When you’re rich and own a sweatshop and have a bunch of kids working in it you laugh all the way to the bank. Driving home you start to think about all those little kids not getting to have a childhood, suffering in bad working conditions, doomed to a life of poverty and ignorance because they don’t get to go to school. And you start to feel guilt, ahhhh, wonderful guilt! You realize that you feel guilt because deep inside you is a wonderful, sensitive, caring person who can empathize with those poor little bastards. You realize that you are human after all, in fact you’re not only human, but you must be a nice human in order to feel bad for those kids. After a while you decide you’ve felt bad long enough, usually just about the time you pull into the driveway of your beautiful home.
The more times you feel guilt the nicer you must be. Feel guilt once in a while, pretty nice person, feel guilt on a regular basis, a real mensch, feel guilt all the time and you’re ready for sainthood, but hey, don’t waste sainthood on me, I’m just doing my part. But the only way you can feel guilt is to screw somebody over, so in order to keep being a nice person you have to keep screwing people over, right? The more people you screw the more guilt you experience and the more you get in touch with that wonderful caring person inside.
Now maybe some of the poor people working in the sweatshop hate you or are angry with you. Don’t worry about it. I know its hard to believe that they could hate anyone who has clearly demonstrated a caring sensitive side the way you have with all the guilt you’ve brought into the world, but some of the ungrateful wretches will. This is another part of guilt that is really good. Guilt is wasted on the poor. The poor have no idea how to use guilt. The average poor person gets angry and hates you, then they feel guilty for hating you (trust me it happens) , but they don’t realize that guilt makes them better because they link the guilt with the anger and feel that they are pretty unworthy. Let’s face it, anyone who could hate a nice person like you is pretty rotten and deserves to work in a sweatshop, but let’s not go too far with that reasoning because if they deserve it then you can’t feel guilty for giving it to them, If you can’t feel guilty then you miss out on being the caring and supportive person you really are, then again maybe you’re providing a valuable service to the universe by seeing to it that all these rotten people who deserve to work in a sweatshop get what they deserve.
Dick Cheney once voted against the school lunch program and Head Start. Now I don’t know if Dick is a Catholic, but if he is I think we should send a letter to the Pope and ask that old Dick get canonized or sainted or whatever they do to you when you’ve screwed up enough people’s lives. Dick has been single-handedly working his ass off to screw people on a regular basis. (They don’t call him Dick for nothing, remember nixon?) From where I’m sitting Dick must have enough guilt to open the gates of heaven any time he is ready to go. Hey this is the guy who shot a lawyer so he can’t be all that bad. He probably felt guilty about that, too. Imagine feeling guilty for shooting a lawyer, yup, no doubt about it, Dick Cheney is in a class all by himself.
